International Perspectives on Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation

BCRC organised a seminar on 11th December 2013 at the Malone Lodge Hotel on the theme of ‘International Perspectives on Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation’. The seminar was organised in partnership with Intercomm, Ineqe and Saferworld and included presentations by representatives of Saferworld, an independent international organisation which works to “prevent violent conflict and build safer lives” worldwide. Will Bennet (Saferworld Conflict & Security Advisor) and Graham Mathias (Saferworld Senior Security and Justice Adviser) both have extensive experience of conflict prevention and peacebuilding and gave presentations on issues with relevance to conflict transformation using an international perspective.

In particular, the seminar provided an overview of some of Saferworld’s key areas of work, including improving community security; supporting inclusive political processes for peace; and building positive, co-operative relationships. The seminar finished with a Q&A session to encourage reflection on what the Belfast context can learn from conflict transformation processes in other contexts worldwide. Positive feedback was received from seminar participants and BCRC is planning another seminar in the next few months. Please check back for an update on our upcoming events and activities.
